For Maddy

Rogue shimmied the gem tone blue satin off her hips and down her legs and stepped out of it. She pulled a floor length, peach-cream dress off a hanger and started figuring out how to pull it on.

"I'm battin' oh for three," she called through the dressing room wall, toward the only other occupied stall. For as bustling as the island version of Manhattan was, it still seemed quiet. Guess that was what you got when you had ghosts making up a population of millions, but Rogue couldn't give a damn. Seized with a fervent desire for normalcy and indulgence, she had rung Madelyne up for brunch with bottomless mimosas, manipedis, and holiday shopping. Not for presents- no point, since it would all be gone- but Rogue wanted party dresses. And stupidly expensive jeans.

And shoes.

She'd made them stop at the make up counter for an absurdly long amount of time, going through different moisturizers, finding a deeply scarlet, heavily pigmented lip balm and gloss and some silky black liquid eyeliner, and some blush, and some brow highlighter because why not, and had carefully lined each eyelid with a champagne gold shadow to make the green pop before actually heading to the dress department.

Rogue had never been able to afford shopping at Bergdorf Goodman's. She was going to take advantage, now.

"Find anything yet?"

"...maybe," Madelyne fires back from her stall across the aisle, turning herself around to catch a view in the mirrors of every possible angle she could ever be viewed at. She'd been a little skeptical about this when Rogue had first thrown it out there, because since when did no money and a ghost town add up to fantastic shopping adventures that couldn't be replicated with a catalog? As it's turned out, however, this day is exactly what Madelyne's been needing to snap herself out of her perpetual frustration at being back in New York with no way whatsoever to even try to pick up the pieces of her former life.

Stepping out of the changing room in a sparkly silver short-sleeved cocktail dress that she's spent five minutes trying to pin down her opinion on (and a pair of gold pumps that she's been too in love with to take off since she saw them), she heads over to the mirror at the end of the row, hoping it might somehow offer new insights. "Come on out here and tell me what you think of this one."

"Perfect," Madelyne purrs, giving a little spin as she checks herself out in the mirror. She still isn't 100% sold, but the second opinion counts for a lot. "Not a lot of opportunities to step out in style in the tropics, no sense in wasting the holidays here."

"I didn't say that," Madelyne replies in a tone that emphatically does not imply that the answer is no. She's still technically married, after all, but with all that's happened...

"We've finally got night life again, feels like such a waste to spend all my nights alone, you know?"

If only it were that simple to write off an entire life.

"Thanks, Rogue," Madelyne replies in spite of that, her smile warm until she turns around and the corners of her mouth tighten wryly. "That really does mean a lot to me. You're trying that one on?"
